Golden Eagles Information - Description

Golden Eagles are named for a patch of golden feathers on the nape of the neck. This feature is only intrinsic to mature species. Immature eagles have distinctive white markings on the underside of the wings near the tips and white tails. Golden Eagles measure 30-35 inches in length, wingspan reaching 78 inches. Their legs are covered with feathers all the way down to the toes, which have strong and sharp talons for gripping prey.

Golden Eagles have a wonderful ability to soar majestically up in the sky, taking advantage of strong air flows. After a period of soaring, the bird comes swooping down, developing a very high speed. This, coupled with perfect vision, allows the predator to target prey with maximum precision and suddenness. The eyes of Golden Eagles have about 5 times as many light-sensor cells as those of humans.

Golden Eagles Information - Life History

Golden Eagles have a large life span, reaching 30 years. Golden Eagles are believed to be monogamous. Both males and females take part in nest-building. They choose solitary places for nesting and they build their nests on rock ledges, basically under the lee of a cliff or a big tree. Nests consist of large sticks and local vegetation and lined with soft vegetation. Eagles build large nests, measuring 4 to 5 feet in diameter.

Incubation period lasts 35-45 days, and clutches contain no more than 3 eggs. Eaglets start to fledge after approximately 75 days. It is interesting to note, that the male participates in incubation, but he spends more time providing food and protection against intruders. After 90-100 days the young leave their parents, and they reach puberty by age of 5 years.
