In the 1950 many Golden Eagles were killed by ranchers, who claimed they were a menace to livestock. Therefore the population of Golden Eagles started dropping at a threatening rate. Another threatening factor was pesticide contamination, and many eagles died from poisoning after eating contaminated rodents.
Since 1963, Golden Eagles have been protected by the US legislation. There are lots of conservation projects, which are aimed at restoration of natural environment and rehabilitation of Golden Eagles. Specialists monitor the movements of the bird by way of satellite-tracking, molecular genetic technology and telemetry. There are a number of research organizations, who by constructive cooperation create national reserves and thus promote the growth of the population of Golden Eagles.
Denali Bird Research and Monitoring Center, in coordination with the US Geological Survey, Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center and Alaskan Bird Observatory created the Denali National Park, which presents ample conditions for Golden Eagles. This park features woodlands, rocky areas, which provide perfect conditions for secure breeding.
This project is not only assigned to preserve this particular species. The goal of the project is creating safe and suitable environment for other species of animals, which also suffer from human disturbance and were forced to move out of the area. Golden Eagles are not the only animals involved in the program.
