Golden Eagles Information - Behavior and Feeding

Golden Eagles are territorial. They defend their nests and do not allow other animals to approach them. They are extremely sensitive to human interference; therefore they choose remote places for nesting. Golden Eagles prefer areas with woods interspersed with fields and meadows, where they can hunt rodents, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits and some other animals.
Their diet consists of a wide variety of animals. This makes them less vulnerable to changes in the environment, and they can easily adapt to various conditions. Hunting is not always successful and about 70% of attacks end in failure.
Golden Eagles are considered to be migratory birds, but they rarely make long moves. They head south-east for wintering and breeding. Intensive industrialization and deforestation has resulted in the destruction of their natural habitat and disappearance of the species from vast areas.

Golden Eagles are not exposed to attacks by predators. However, they suffer a great deal from human activity, and it has been estimated, that more than 50% of death are human-related. Eagles often die from poisoning and illegal shooting. Very many golden eagles get killed by wind power turbines. For instance, every year 40 Golden Eagles are reported to die in the turbines near Attamont Pass.
